The Project Committee are please to announce Rosa Daniela Diaz has won the 2024 Textiles, Fibre & Ceramics Curators Choice Award for the artwork 'We Are Bound Within Cycles' inspired by the walks shared with the artists mother, which will be featured on the Project website for a month.
From Rosa about her work: "We are bound within cycles through birth and death, existing in the seasons of our lives and in nature. We flux, we stumble, but we must rejoice in them, because within the hardships of our grief and loss, like in nature, there is the opportunity for learning, regrowth and transformation."
"This work was inspired by the walks I went on with my mother while I was caring for her. The vines collected along the path. I have also re-purposed my mother's knitting and dressmakers pattern paper, found objects and textiles mixed media."
Rosa Daniela Diaz investigates, body, memory, matrilineal ancestry and her cultural heritage of Uruguay, through care and reparative practices and a feminist lens.
Diaz is interested in honouring matrilineal histories, women and ancient textile processes and techniques, using aged, repurposed textile materials handed down by her mother, and found organic and manmade objects and textiles. Diaz explores the materials potential and possibilities of transformation, always conscious that the material has history and carries memory. Diaz’s latest body of work transforms her mother’s aged dressmaking pattern paper into bodily woven sculptural forms and maps cultural place and belonging.
